The glass making technique of Murrina was born in the ancient Rome. Its popularity really increased in the 18th century, when the technique was refined. By this new technique designs have become more elaborate and complex.
The typical Millefiori Design
"Millefoiri" or "Thousand of Flowers" is one of these very, very, complicated designs. This special creation is made by melting together numerous thin canes of glass. These canes can have the form of a star, flower or other shape. Afterwards additional glass layers can be covered in different colours. To obtain concentric designs they put it in the mould again. At last, the glass sphere is heated and formed to a thin glass cane.

Murrina - A complex unique piece of Art
For getting "Murrina" they have to go some steps further. The above explained Millefiori cane is cut into little pieces and then placed into another mould, according to the wished pattern and design. The small pieces merge as soon as this creation is heated and as a result you get a unique piece – the famous Murrina. This process can even be repeated until it reaches the desired shape and complexity. This is really handicraft work - done by hand, no hi-tech machinery is involved. And - it is a very elaborate Work that few living artists do really well.
From Vittorio Voltlina to Antica Murrina Veneziana
1960's the Voltolina brothers began creating various works of art from glass. In this time their company named under 'Vittorio Voltolina'.
The next step was also the most important: In 1988 they've added the Murrina to their company. As explained above, Murrina is one of Venice's most important and oldest tradition, the unique method of creating glass arts. With the rebirth of this historic technique the success story of the company began.
Several years later the company changed the name to its current. The brothers even received a medal of gratitude from the city’s administration for their great effort to regain one of the lost treasures of Venice.
