HistoryThe Italian flag is very similar to that of France and has a very rich history. The red, green, and white colours found on the Italian flag were first in use in 1796 by the Lombardy region of northern Italy, then controlled by the French. These colours were also used in the flag of the Cisalpine Republic, under Napoleon Bonaparte in 1797.The King of Sardinia ruled much of modern Italy in 1848 and also adopted the tri-colour flag, adding his personal coat of arms to the design. In 1861, when the Italian Kingdom was recognized, this flag continued to represent the unified nation. The Italian flag we know today was officially recognized on June 19, 1946 and the coat of arms were removed.
