Italian Horn Charms

Italian horn charms are one magnificent Italian gift that you can choose to give to a friend or loved one. This is a good luck charm the origins of which extend back a few thousand years.

ward of the evil eye

They were originally made to depict the Moon Goddess' horns, which were signs of protection, especially to ward off the Evil Eye. The Evil Eye was believed to be able to be cause simply by jealousy and could kill fertility of people, animals, trees, and crops, as well as bring terrible bad luck.

double protection agains evil

But with the introduction of Christianity, the prominence of the Moon Goddess faded. She became replaced by the Virgin Mary, who of course is really a goddess image herself. Italian protection charms and wards then began depicting the Virgin, but the horn charms still remained.

Nowadays some Italians wear both the Virgin and the horn charm at the same time, to give themselves double protection against evil.

Materials

They are predominantly made out of silver. Silver is the "moon metal" and therefore a fitting symbol for the horns of the goddess.

Natural coral is also widely used, for the goddess was said to have born from the foam of the sea. But in recent times, the horn charms have been made from several other materials as well, including including platinum, gold, and white gold.

It's also not too hard to find them with gold trimming or diamonds. Some people prefer the gold or other fancier charms, but these days anyone can find one to fit their tastes as well as their budget.

The Charm of Italian Horns

Italian horn charms show pride in Italian culture. There are still modern-day pagans, "neopagans" as they are called today, and they may love having a piece of Italian Old Religion spirituality for their own, even if it's made of modern materials.

But you don't have to follow the religion of the Moon Goddess to appreciate one of these elegant and beautifully simple pieces of jewelry. These charms are more about culture and general spirituality than they are about any religion. And if you are a Christian you do not have to worry that you are decking yourself out in anything "of the devil". Remember, these horn charms protect against the Evil Eye--what Christians would call the Devil.

in all forms and variations

You can find the Italian horn charms in the form of earrings, necklace pendants, and bracelet charms. You can also find them as brooches. If you're going to give one of these as a gift, first make sure you know the tastes of the person you intend to give it to. If they're a fit, honor them with the gift of an Italian horn charm.
