Italian Newspapers

Which Italian newspapers are number one in readership? The top papers La Republica, and Corriere dello Sport/Stadio are both published daily. One covers all of the regions in the country, while Stadio focuses on sports. Each one has a huge readership.

Most started as news announcements

There are many regional Inewspapers, some with a long and distinguished history. Some papers were started in basements, or as news announcements from prominent families. Over time, the announcement pages evolved into newspapers, keeping their regional flair and focus.

L'Arena is published in Northeaster Italy, and has been since 1866.

Avvenire is based in Milan and has a strong Catholic influence.

Gazzetta di Reggio in Reggio Emilia started as a police announcement sheet.

Giornale di Sicilia is the largest readership of any Italian newspaper in Sicily.

Daily news - a ritual among italians

The consumption of daily news is almost a ritual with some Italians. Cafes are packed with tourists and locals drinking strong coffee and reading daily Italian papers to catch up on the day's news.

Special Tip: Corriere della Sera

However, if you are an English speaking native looking for an Italian Newspaper, consider reading Corriere della Sera (English). This newspaper is published completely in English, but it has an Italian counterpart, and indeed, many Italians consider it the New York Times of Italy.

Italian Magazines

Another popular option for Italian readers is magazines.

Fashion is the first subject that pops to mind when it comes to Italian news, but la cosa nostra is a close second. Then of course, the Vatican, and art world dominate topics of conversation and thought. To that end, several magazines cover those areas for their readers.
Amica and Anna are two monthly fashion magazines targeted toward Italian women.

Il Mondo is a weekly business magazine, while Italian GQ focuses on men's fashion, plus other articles of interest.

Viaggi e Sapori is jammed with photographs, artwork and articles that even non-Italian speakers will enjoy.

Panorama is the Italian answer to Time magazine, focusing on national politics and news.

Most of the Italian magazines are monthlies, but the readership level is still high. Along with newspapers, magazines are read by a vast majority of the population.
