Italian White Wines

Italian White Wines are excellent although your first thought might go to red wine when you think of buying best italian wines. Read here which italian white wines we recommend.

More than Italy's Other Wine

Did you know there are wine equivalents to "urban legends"? A prominent myth is that Italy's best wines are all red. The misunderstanding is understandable. It is true that Italy produces about twice as much red wine as white wine. What’s more, most of Italy’s famous wines are red: Barolo, Brunello di Montalcino and the ever-popular Chianti - to just name a few.

crisp and light

Nevertheless, Italy definitely has what it takes to make excellent white wines. Although they are still much lesser known than their renowned red cousins, there is no reason for (false) modesty. Italy's white wines are crisp, light and perfectly suited to accompany food without overpowering it.

genuine dryish flavour

Italy’s white wines are primarily grown in the cooler northern areas, collectively called "Tre Venezie" (literally "Three Venices". The alpine climate adds the genuine dryish flavor that is so characteristic for Italian white wines.

Pinot Grigio

Since it has found huge commercial success, the most well known Italian white is probably Pinot Grigio. Produced in Veneto, this pale, high-acid wine has a slightly lemony flavor which goes very well with seafood, grilled fish and salads.

Soave

Being a close cousin to Pinot Grigio, Soave has a fruty, slightly sweet aroma and is best consumed young (about three years from the vintage).

Gavi

The delicious, very dry Gavi is still an insider's tip but constantly growing in popularity.

broad variety beside the mass market

By the way, "Italian white wines all taste alike" is just another unmerited wine myth. Once you leave the mass-market segment, there is a broad variety among Italy's whites awaiting the real aficionado.
