Murano Pendants

Pendants Made From Murano Glass - a must have!

Read here where to get the must stunning Murano Pendants. Most people who have visited Venice at some time or another come home with at least one piece of Murano glass and that piece is more often than not in the shape of a pendant to wear around the neck.

A Little Bit of History

As well as being both popular and stylish, Murano glass has its place in history. The vases and bowls dating as far back as Ancient Rome, Alexandrine and Phoenician times featuring the geometric and floral patterns found within the glass rods (known as murrine) after fusion had taken place. They are referred to along with many other leading art methods of the same era by Pliny the Elder in his book of Natural History (Book XXXVII).

Murrine resurfaced once more during the 16th century during its rediscovery on the island of Murano, a small distance away by boat from Venice.

How they are made

The way these Murano pendants are made is extremely interesting. First of all a glass rod is covered with many layers of differently colored glass which makes for the intricate design associated with Murano pieces.

The layers are then all fused together by the rod being heated in a furnace. It's allowed to cool a little and then reheated and stretched long and thin so it manages to keep the perfect cross section of the original design.

When completely cool, the rod is cut into small discs which are then placed into differently shaped and sized rings made of metal. The pieces are once more reheated to form the shape of the pendant prior to the grounded and then polished stunningly beautiful glass mosaic being produced.

The designs of Murano pendants are plentiful but the most popular ones are a simple circle, a cross or a heart shape.

Uniqueness at Its Best

Once the making of the mosaic is finished, all that is left is for it to be set in a sterling silver or gold frame. As the pendants are made by hand you will never get two identical pieces so you know you are in possession of uniqueness at its best - a one of a kind jewel which will reflect the light perfectly.
